Caring for an aging European population as they transition from active and independent lifestyles to those requiring support and care is a challenging and multifaceted task. Therefore, within the SAAM project, we focus on a new and innovative, technology-enabled approach. By use of ambient sensing and emphasis on seniors’ needs and preferences, an inexpensive and useful coaching system, which is also leveraging the senior’s social support networks, is developed. This so-called SAAM system will support Europe`s senior citizens to stay active and live independently at home for as long as possible.
SAAM is a three-years project and started in October 2017. It is funded by the European Union’s (EU) Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The Center for Human-Computer Interaction (CHCI) is one of ten project partners, which collaboratively work on implementing the SAAM system in Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Slovenia, and the United Kingdom. CHCI is represented in the SAAM project by an interdisciplinary team with backgrounds in social sciences, behavioural economics, design, communication, and persuasive technologies.
